Domestic Violence Against Men ? It DOES Exist | Shaw Law Texas

While victims of domestic violence (DV) are generally women, men are victimized as well. ?Domestic violence ? also known as domestic abuse, battering or intimate partner violence ? occurs between people in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence against men can take many forms, including emotional, sexual and physical abuse and threats of abuse. It can happen in heterosexual or same sex relationships.? (1) Unfortunately, very little is known about the actual number of men who end up victims of DV. Reasons given for this include that the incidence of DV reported by men is at such a low level it is a challenge to get substantially, reliable figures. Also, there is not much currently done to encourage men to speak out and take action against DV. Although by definition, domestic violence is the same whether it involves men or women, the reasons, purposes, and motivations generally vary quite significantly. Consequently, intervention approaches and therapies must be customized to be as effective as possible depending on whether the victim (and patient) is an abused woman or an abused man. Also, another factor of importance is whether the victim is a heterosexual or homosexual male since this can also play a factor in both intervention and treatment approaches. Some reasons given as to why men choose to remain in abusive relationships include protection of children, feelings of guilt, and dependency on the abusive partner. According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2010, 1 in 7 men experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner. Although women continue to suffer from DV more than men, the survey findings support claims that more attention needs to be brought to the issue of men victimized by domestic abuse and treatment of male victims. In addition, 35% of men who experienced ?rape, stalking or physical violence by an intimate partner reported significant short or long term impacts related to the violence experienced in this relationship such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms and injury.? (2) Regarding gay victims, society tends to judge the gay victim as being at fault rather than a true victim as he would be if heterosexual. In addition, ?critics?use citations of higher rates of domestic violence as ?proof? that gay?relationships are dysfunctional.? (3) Researchers have suggested that although the homosexual community is quite possibly more likely to speak out against and discuss DV today, this was not always the case. In the 1980s and 1990s, most gays and lesbians had very real fear of opening up because of the fear of hurting the image of homosexuals in a ?homophobic? society and coming across as trying to ?take the focus off of fighting heterosexism.? They also explain that society ? in particular the police and courts ? are not as likely going to take action to deal with a case involving a homosexual victim and will more likely assume that the abuse was not in fact abuse but ?mutual combat.? Some victims have even found themselves being attacked by the legal system rather than supported and protected. (3) Whether homosexual or heterosexual, domestic violence against men is a real problem and deserves the same attention as domestic violence against women. According to Brian Watson, ?domestic violence is not a male or female problem, but rather a human problem, and that a lasting solution must address the cruelty ? and suffering ? of both sexes.?
Locally, there are events held to raise awareness as well as organizations and support groups that offer resources on and support for victims of domestic violence. On Thursday, June 14, 2012 (6:30-8:30 PM), Men with Momentum: Speed and Spirits will support Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA) through a local fundraiser. AVDA is a private, non-profit organization that has been serving victims since 1980 and works with both the victim(s) and the abuser. They offer two services ? the Legal Advocacy Program and the Victim Advocacy program. For information on AVDA and this event, please visit the site.? Proceeds from the event will go towards AVDA?s intervention and prevention services as it is one of only nine legal-aid programs in the country that is dedicated to providing free attorneys for abused women and children. Since its inception, the organization has played a role in over 100,000 domestic violence cases in the Harris County Family Trial Division ? and this number will undoubtedly increase as they grow and continue taking action. PLEASE SUPPORT THIS IMPORTANT CAUSE ? For more information about the AVDA event see:

Liberia's Taylor jailed for 50 years over 'brutal crimes'

Toussaint Kluiters / Pool via AP

Former Liberian President Charles Taylor waits to be sentenced at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague on Wednesday.

By msnbc.com news services

THE HAGUE -- Judges at the international war crimes court sentenced former Liberian President Charles Taylor to 50 years in prison on Wednesday, saying he was responsible for "some of the most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history."

He had been convicted of supporting rebels in Sierra Leone who murdered and mutilated thousands during their country's brutal civil war in return for blood diamonds.

Ex-Liberia President Charles Taylor guilty in 'watershed' war-crimes case

The Special Court for Sierra Leone found Taylor guilty last month on 11 charges of aiding and abetting the rebels who went on a bloody rampage during the decade-long war that ended in 2002 with more than 50,000 dead.

Presiding Judge Richard Lussick says the crimes Taylor was convicted of were of the "utmost gravity in terms of scale and brutality."

Blood diamonds? Supermodel thought they were 'dirty stones'

"The lives of many more innocent civilians in Sierra Leone were lost or destroyed as a direct result of his actions," Lussick said.

Taylor showed no emotion as Lussick handed down what will effectively be a life sentence.?

The 64-year-old warlord-turned-president is the first former head of state convicted by an international war crimes court since World War II.

'In a class of his own'
Prosecutors had asked judges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone to impose an 80-year sentence; Taylor's lawyers urged judges to hand down a sentence that offered him some hope of release before he dies.

Lussick said an 80-year sentence would have been excessive as Taylor was convicted of aiding and abetting crimes and not direct involvement.?

But the judge added that Taylor was "in a class of his own" compared to others convicted by the United Nations-backed court.?

"The special status of Mr. Taylor as a head of state puts him in a different category of offenders for the purpose of sentencing," Lussick said.??

The International Criminal Court at the Hague has found former Liberian President Charles Taylor guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes and crimes against humanity by supporting brutal rebels responsible for countless atrocities in the 1991-2002 Sierra Leone civil war. ITV's Paul Brand reports.

At a sentencing hearing earlier this month, Taylor expressed "deepest sympathy" for the suffering of victims of atrocities in Sierra Leone, but insisted he had acted to help stabilize the West Africa region and claimed he never knowingly assisted in the commission of crimes.

"What I did...was done with honor," he said. "I was convinced that unless there was peace in Sierra Leone, Liberia would not be able to move forward."

However, judges ruled that Taylor armed and supplied the rebels in full knowledge they would likely use weapons to commit terrible crimes, in exchange for payments of "blood diamonds" often obtained by slave labor.

Prosecutors said there was no reason for leniency, given the extreme nature of the crimes, Taylor's "greed" and misuse of his position of power.

"The purposely cruel and savage crimes committed included public executions and amputations of civilians, the display of decapitated heads at checkpoints, the killing and public disembowelment of a civilian whose intestines were then stretched across the road to make a check point, public rapes of women and girls, and people burned alive in their homes," prosecutor Brenda Hollis wrote in a brief appealing for the 80-year sentence.

Taylor stepped down and fled into exile in Nigeria after being indicted by the court in 2003. He was finally arrested and sent to the Netherlands in 2006.

While the Sierra Leone court is based in that country's capital, Freetown, Taylor's trial is being staged in Leidschendam, a suburb of The Hague, for fear holding it in West Africa could destabilize the region.?

(AP Photo/Google)

(AP) ? Google will try to win more converts to a computer operating system revolving around its popular Chrome Web browser with a new wave of lightweight laptops built by Samsung Electronics.

Tuesday's release of the next-generation Chromebooks will give Google and Samsung another opportunity to persuade consumers and businesses to buy an unconventional computer instead of machines running on familiar software by industry pioneers Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc.

Unlike most computers, Google's Chromebooks don't have a hard drive. They function like terminals dependent on an Internet connection. The laptops come with 16 gigabytes of flash memory ? the kind found in smartphones, tablet computers and some iPods. Two USB ports allow external hard drives and other devices to be plugged into the machines.

Chromebooks haven't made much of a dent in the market since their debut a year ago. In that time, more people have been embracing Apple's iPad and other tablet computers ? a factor that has contributed to a slowdown in sales of personal computers.

The cool reception to Chromebooks has raised questions about whether Google misjudged the demand for computers designed to quickly connect to its dominant Internet search engine and ever-expanding stable of other online services, ranging from email to a recently introduced file-storage system called Drive.

"The Chromebooks have had less to offer than tablets, so they haven't been that interesting to consumers," said Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa.

Google says it always intended to take things slowly with the Chromebooks to give its engineers time to understand the shortcomings of the machines and make the necessary improvements.

"This release is a big step in the journey to bringing (Chromebooks) to the mainstream," said Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president of Chrome and apps.

The upgraded laptop, called "Series 5 550," is supposed to run two-and-half times faster than the original machines, and boasts higher-definition video. Google also added features that will enable users to edit documents offline, read more content created in widely used Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel, and retrieve material from another computer at home or an office. More emphasis is being placed on Chrome's Web store, which features more than 50,000 applications.

The price: $449 for models that only connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi and $549 for a machine that connects on a 3G network. Samsung's original Chromebooks started out with prices ranging from $429 to $499. Like the original Chromebooks, the next-generation machines feature a 12.1-inch screen display and run on an Intel processor.

Google Inc. and Samsung also are introducing a "Chromebox" that can be plugged into a display monitor to create the equivalent of desktop computer. The box will sell for $329.

The latest Chromebook and new Chromebox will be available online only, beginning in the U.S. on Tuesday, followed by a Wednesday release in the United Kingdom. The products will go on sale in brick-and-mortar stores for the first time in still-to-be-determined Best Buy locations next month.

The expansion beyond Internet-only sales signals Google's determination to attract a mass audience to its Chromebooks, just as it's done with smartphones running on its Android software. More than 300 million mobile devices have been activated on Android since the software's 2008 release.

Without providing specifics, Pichai said several other computer manufacturers will release Chromebooks later this year. Google plans to back the expanded line of Chromebooks with a marketing blitz during the holiday shopping season in November and December.

One reason Google is confident Chromebooks will eventually catch on is because the Chrome Web browser has attracted so many fans in less than four years on the market. The company says more than 200 million people worldwide currently are using the Chrome browser.

Like other laptop and desktop computers, the Chromebooks will have to contend with the accelerating shift to the iPad and other tablets. The iPad 2, an older version of Apple's tablet line, sells for as little as $399, undercutting the new Chromebook. Other low-cost tablets are expected to hit the market later this year. One of them might even be made by Motorola Mobility, a device maker that Google bought for $12.5 billion earlier this month. Google so far hasn't commented on Motorola's future plans for the tablet market.

The new Chromebooks also are hitting the market at a time when some prospective computer buyers may be delaying purchases until they can check out machines running on Windows 8, a makeover of Microsoft's operating system that is expected to be released in September or October. Microsoft designed Windows 8 so it can be controlled through touch as well as keyboards. That versatility is expected to inspire the creation of hybrid machines that are part laptop, part tablet.

Google shares added $2.81 Tuesday to close at $594.34.

(AP) ? The debt crisis that has ravaged Europe for the best part of three years has exposed a dislike of the single currency but little desire to abandon it, a wide-ranging survey of public opinion found Tuesday.

Pew Research Center's survey across eight European Union countries, including five members of the 17-country eurozone, indicated that the region's financial problems have triggered full-blown fears about the future of Europe as a political project.

"This crisis of confidence is evident in the economy, in the future, in the benefits of European economic integration, in EU membership, in the euro and in the free market system," Pew said in a statement accompanying its survey.

Despite those concerns, Pew found there was no desire for those countries that use the euro to return to their former currencies, such as the French franc or the Spanish peseta. The euro launched in 1999 and is now used by 17 countries.

In Greece, the epicenter of the debt crisis, 71 percent of those polled want to keep the euro, as against to 23 percent that want to return to the drachma. More people in Greece, which is now in its fifth year of a savage recession, think the euro has been good for them than bad ? 46 percent of those surveyed compared to 26 percent who thought it was a bad thing.

These findings may be crucial as Greece heads to the polls on June 17 in a general election many see as a referendum on the country's euro membership.

Varvara Konstantopoulou, a 65-year-old pensioner in Athens, summed up the dilemma that is at the heart of a country that is trapped between indefinite austerity and a catastrophic currency exit.

"I don't think the euro helped us. When we joined everything became more expensive," she said. "But we are trapped now. If we leave the euro, our money will not be worth anything. It's worse for people on a fixed income."

Her 45-year-old unemployed daughter, Alexia, agreed with her mother that Greece was not ready for the euro when it joined in 2001. However, she thinks the euro will survive but that in the future countries should get a grip on their public finances so there's no repeat of the current crisis.

"Otherwise they will end up like us," she said. "Every country should sort out its own problems, but they have to help us to keep things going smoothly (for the euro)."

Recent opinion polls in Greece have suggested there's a movement towards political parties, notably the conservative New Democracy, that are willing to meet the commitments the country has already made in return for its bailout lifeline.

Though Pew found little appetite for abandoning the euro, the survey revealed a prevailing skepticism over Europe's single currency.

More people in France, Italy and Spain think the euro has been more damaging than beneficial. In Italy, which has the second-highest debt burden in the eurozone after Greece, 44 percent of those people surveyed said the euro has been a bad thing, as opposed to 30 percent who think it has done good. Italy is also home to the biggest anti-euro constituency, with 40 percent of those polled wanting to return to the lira as against to 52 percent backing the euro.

Among the five euro countries surveyed there wasn't one where a majority ? over 50 percent ? of those polled thought the currency has been beneficial.

In Germany, Europe's biggest economy, more people thought it was beneficial than damaging.

"It's got a lot of advantages," said Andreas Schwanekamp, an office worker in Frankfurt, Germany. "We don't have to exchange currency when we leave the country."

Germany's exporters have benefited from the relatively low value of the euro against other key currencies such as the dollar when compared to what the deutschemark would likely be trading at.

"We're an exporter," Schwanekamp, 47, added. "If we still had the deutschemark, we would be more expensive relative to the other currencies in Europe."

The survey also found that two-thirds of Germans want to keep the currency even though the country has to make the biggest contributions to the financial bailouts.

Among the countries surveyed that did not have the euro as their currency there were big majorities in Britain, the Czech Republic and Poland who thought it has been better for them not to have been in the euro bloc.

In Washington, the Obama administration announced Tuesday it had dispatched its top international finance official to Europe for a round of discussions.

U.S. Treasury Undersecretary for International Affairs Lael Brainard was holding discussions with senior government officials in Athens on Tuesday. She was scheduled to meet with officials in Frankfurt, Germany, and Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Brainard will meet with officials in Paris and Berlin and will wrap up her trip with further discussions in Berlin on Friday.

The U.S. Treasury said in a statement that Brainard would meet with "senior government officials in each country to discuss their plans for achieving economic stability and growth in Europe."

The Pew surveys were conducted by telephone in some countries and face-to-face in others between mid-March and mid-April, with at least 1,000 people surveyed in each country. The margin of error varied by country, from 3.3 percent to 4.4 percent.

If you are new to internet marketing, you may be wondering if it is possible to create an income when you are so fresh from the starting gates. You absolutely can make an internet income before your business becomes profitable or you have your own product with Affiliate Marketing. This is how it works?

    1. Write your email so it tells a story and that story leads into the product.

2.Tell your list about your experience with the product and how it has benefited you.

3.Make sure you include your affiliate link in the email. Three times seems to be the magic number for affiliate links within an email.

4.If you only promote good products that relate to your list, they will come to trust your recommendations.

OK, you?re thinking, I?m a new Internet Marketer, I don?t have a list. Then you need to work on that. There are resources out there that can help you with that, like the Email Magic free 30 day list building course. Make list building your #1 priority. But never fear, you can still make money with Affiliate Marketing while you are growing your list. That?s right, despite what the gurus tell you, you don?t have to have a huge list to make money online. A small list of buyers is wirth much more than a huge list of non-buyers. Right? I learned that from Connie Ragan Green aka the Marketing Madwoman She taught me to treat the list you have like gold, be authentic and show integrity. They?ll buy from you if you do.

Social Media Marketing is another great way to make money with other people?s products. The same principles apply. Show your networks you are someone trustworthy with integrity, only promote what you believe in and add value to what you promote. Don?t blast your product links all over, but let people know you are there to help. Build relationships, communicate, converse. Let others get to know you.

Aweber gives you a direct link to your email marketing broadcasts so you can tweet or post those links for others to read the same promotional emails you send to your list. The internet income potential is limitless even if you never have your own products. Be creative, helpful and be a benefit to others. Learn from others more successful than you. Be an internet marketer with integrity and you will succeed.

(AP) ? Kasey Kahne was starting to feel a little guilty.

Sure, he'd finished in the top 10 in five of the last six Sprint Cup races, but he still hadn't picked up that elusive first victory for car owner Rick Hendrick.

"Our team is solid. Our car is solid. Mr. Hendrick gives us everything we need to win races and run up front," Kahne said. "I just knew for myself I needed to step up."

    And he did just that.

Kahne pulled away to victory in the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night, winning NASCAR's longest race for the third time and gaining his stripes for Hendrick Motorsports the only way that matters ? taking the checkered flag.

"I never really doubted myself," Kahne said. "I was upset at some of the things that may have happened. I made a huge mistake at Phoenix, hit the wall there. But other than that, we were solid, we were fast. It was just a matter of getting past those five weeks and moving on and putting some solid races together."

The self-imposed pressure grew this week before Charlotte Motor Speedway at a party Hendrick threw to celebrate the owner's 200th career win Jimmie Johnson earned at Darlington Raceway two weeks back. Kahne was introduced as part of the current team ? after the 15 drivers who won races for Hendrick took a bow.

Hendrick then challenged him to win the Coca-Cola 600.

Despite the challenge, Hendrick could tell the losing streak was wearing on Kahne and tried to assure him that better times were ahead.

"Well, I could see that it was bothering him," Hendrick said. "A racer doesn't like to wreck a car or have bad luck. You could see it with Kenny, too. They hated to have those problems. When you can see, again, they had speed. I tried to reassure them, 'Look, we're in this for the long haul. You guys are running good. You just have to have some breaks.'"

And it was a popular victory.

Teammate Jeff Gordon rushed up to hug Kahne after the race and told him, "Proud of you."

What a roll for Hendrick Motorsports. The program was stuck on 199 victories since October. Then came Johnson's milestone win at Darlington. The five-time champion followed that with a victory in the All-Star race at Charlotte last week.

Kahne led four Hendrick cars in the top 11. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was sixth and Gordon was right behind in seventh ? only his third top 10 finish of the year. Johnson came in 11th. He was vying for more but fell from contention with a mistake on the final pit stop as he left the stall with his gas can still engaged, dragging his crew member behind.

Johnson was docked with a stop-and-go penalty that ended his chances at winning a third straight week.

"I think we're showing the consistency from all of our teams," Hendrick said. "I can't wait for the second half of the season."

Kahne crossed the finish line nearly 5 seconds ahead of Denny Hamlin. Kyle Busch was third and series points leader Greg Biffle fourth.

It was Kahne's 13th career win and first since last November in Phoenix.

Kahne's a racing gym rat who can't stay away from competition. He drives in NASCAR Truck races when the Sprint Cup series is off ? as he did at Darlington in 2011 and Rockingham this spring ? and raced this weekend in the World of Outlaws dirt track contest across the street from Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Kahne led 96 laps, including the final 42. He doesn't see why the winning can't continue.

"I just know that the cars and the people we have that Mr. Hendrick gives us is everything that we need to win," Kahne said.

Danica Patrick, the first woman to drive in the race since Janet Guthrie in 1976, was five laps down in 30th ? her best finish in three career Sprint Cup races.

Car owner Chip Ganassi flew to Charlotte after celebrating Dario Franchitti's win at the Indianapolis 500 earlier Sunday. Ganassi, part of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, had hoped to double up with drivers Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya. But 250 laps in, McMurray was a lap down and Montoya two behind after needing an extra pit stop to tighten a loose wheel.

"The minute I walked into the garage, people were high-fiving me," Ganassi said. "Right now, we've got to get our cars up the grid."

It didn't happen as Montoya finished two laps down in 20th and McMurray right behind in 21st.

For much of this race, it looked as if Biffle wouldn't be caught. He led 204 laps to dominate early and was clearly best as the race began in the hot, bright sunshine. Once the night cooled off the track, Biffle was no match for Kahne.

"Kasey's car was just better at night," Biffle said.

An early crash took Patrick out of contention in the season-opening Daytona 500 and she finished 38th. Patrick returned to Sprint Cup two weeks ago at treacherous Darlington and lasted throughout at the track considered "Too Tough to Tame" and crossed the line in 31st.

Patrick's goals this week were simply to be running at the end ? and that she was. Starting 40th after a poor qualifying effort, Patrick quickly fell top laps down. But she held on throughout the long, long night.

Patrick also kept her humor. When she was cautioned by her team to keep hydrating, Patrick cracked, "Copy that. Every time you don't get an answer to a question, that's what I'm doing."

Patrick's next Sprint Cup race will be at Bristol on Aug. 25. She promised to be more aggressive upon her return.

"Now that I'm getting more comfortable in certain situations, it's time to start testing those waters and freeing the car up a little bit and seeing what we can get out of it," Patrick said.

Earnhardt had hoped to avenge last year's heartbreaking loss when he ran out of fuel 700 feet from the finish line while leading. Earnhardt came as close to second and was drag-racing Hamlin for the lead on the final restart before as the large crowd at Charlotte Motor Speedway howled. Earnhardt, too, couldn't keep up with his teammate and his winless drought grew to 141 races.

NASCAR's king, career victory leader Richard Petty, had both his entries starting 1-2. But polesitter Aric Almirola quickly fell back and finished 16th. Marcos Ambrose, who started second, broke a wheel hub and ended up 32nd.

The race was the quickest ever for the 600 at 3 hours, 51 minutes, 14 seconds, nearly 5 minutes faster than the mark set in 1995.

Sunday Sound: Heard on 'This Week'

    (ABC News)

Below are some of the notable comments made Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

Sunday Sound: Heard on 'This Week'

Leon Panetta, U.S. Secretary of Defense ?

Panetta on Being Secretary of Defense

PANETTA: Well, you don't get a hell of a lot of sleep, let's put it that way. There are a lot of challenges. ?You know, as director of the CIA, got an awful lot of intelligence about all the horrible things that could go on across the world. ?In this job, I get the same intelligence but I'm responsible for a lot of the operations dealing with those threats. But I have probably the greatest strength of our country is the men and women in uniform that serve this country, put their lives on the line. ?And that's something that I get to see up close and I'm very proud of them and proud of what they do.

    Panetta on Afghanistan

PANETTA: Listen, we still have a fight on our hands. ?The American people need to know that. ?The world needs to know that we still have a fight on our hands. ?We're still dealing with the Taliban. Although they've been weakened, they are resilient. We have the concern about the safe haven in Pakistan, the fact that they can seek refuge in that safe haven, that's a concern. But we're on the right track. ?General Allen has laid out a plan that moves us in the direction of an Afghanistan that can truly govern and secure itself. ?And that is going to be our greatest safeguard to the potential of the Taliban ever coming back.

The "Disturbing" Sentencing of The Doctor that Helped Find Bin Laden

PANETTA: ?It's - it is so difficult to understand and it's so disturbing that they would sentence this doctor to 33 years for helping in the search for the most notorious terrorist in our times. ?This doctor was not working against Pakistan. He was working against Al Qaeda. ?And I hope that ultimately Pakistan understands that, because what they have done here, I think, you know, does not help in the effort to try to reestablish a relationship between the United States and Pakistan.

TAPPER: ?Secretary Panetta, can we call Pakistan an ally when they do something like this, when they sentence a doctor who helps the United States find bin Laden, who has killed more Muslims than I can count? ?How can we call them an ally when they sentence this guy to prison?

PANETTA: ?Well, Jake, this has been one of the most complicated relationships that we've had, working with Pakistan. ?You know, we have to continue to work at it. ?It is important. ?This is a country that has - that has nuclear weapons. This is a country that still is critical in that region of the world.? It's an up-and-down relationship. ?There have been periods where we've had good cooperation and they have worked with us. And there have been periods where we've had conflict. ?But they're dealing with the terrorist threat just like we are.

Readied Plans To Carry Out a Military Strike on Iran

PANETTA: We begin with the fundamental premise here. ?The fundamental premise is that neither the United States or the international community is going to allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. ?We will do everything we can to prevent them from developing a weapon. International community's been unified. ?We've put very tough sanctions on them as a result of that, and we are - you know, we are prepared for any contingency in that part of the world. ?But our hope is that these matters can be resolved diplomatically.

TAPPER: The American Ambassador to Israel said a few days ago that the U.S. is quote "ready from a military perspective to carry out a strike on Iran." ?That's true?

PANETTA: One of the things that we do at the Defense Department, Jake, is plan. ?And we have - we have plans to be able to implement any contingency we have to in order to defend ourselves.

Leon Panetta Dismisses Romney's Afghanistan Criticism

PANETTA: Without getting into the campaign rhetoric of what he's asserting, I think you've got 50 nations in NATO that agree to a plan in Afghanistan.? It's the Lisbon agreement, an agreement that, you know, others, President Bush, President Obama, everyone has agreed is the direction that we go in in Afghanistan. What is that direction? ?It's to take us to a point where we draw down by the end of 2014.

That is the plan that has been agreed to. ?And it's a plan that is working.

And very frankly, the only way to get this accomplished in terms of the transition that we have to go through is to be able to set the kind of timelines that have been set here in order to ensure that we fulfill the mission of an Afghanistan that governs and secures itself. ?That's what this is about.

    Sharing too Much with Hollywood?

TAPPER: There's been a lot in the press in the last few days about the fact that the Obama administration cooperated with the filmmakers Kathryn Bigelow and Michael Boal, who are making this Bin Laden film. Can you assert that nothing inappropriate was shared with these filmmakers?

PANETTA: Yeah - nothing inappropriate was shared with them, Jake. ?You know, we get inquires everyday from the entertainment industry. ?We get inquiries from people writing articles, from people writing books, people doing television shows. ?And the process that we've established is that you know, we will work with those individuals. ?We'll try to make sure that we give them accurate information so that the historic record is protected. ?But you know, we do not share anything that is inappropriate with anybody.

    Preparing to Prevent "Cyber Attacks"

TAPPER: The Pentagon has acknowledged recently China is the biggest source of cyber attacks against this country, including stealing our military secrets. ?Newt Gingrich spoke about this threat on the campaign trail often. ?He said cyber attacks, cyber spying, are quote, "acts of war." Do you agree? ?Are they acts of war, and how would the United States respond?

PANETTA: Well, there's no question that if a cyber attack, you know, crippled our power grid in this country, took down our financial systems, took down our government systems, that that would constitute an act of war. But what we're involved with here is the effort to make sure that never happens. ?And in order to do that, we've got to engage. You know, I think it's important for us to engage China in this effort. ?That's one of the issues I raised when the minister of defense came here from China. ?How can we better engage on this issue, to share information and to ensure that those kinds of attacks never happen, because this is an area where the technology is developing quickly and where clearly it is becoming an adjunct in terms of any country that moves against another country militarily.

This is something we've got to pay attention to. ?And it's not only with China. ?We've got to engage Russia. ?We've got to engage other countries in an effort to try to develop some kind of standards here that will assure us that just as we did in the nuclear area, we can take steps to prevent a mistake that could be very damaging to our security.

On Memorial Day Weekend: Panetta Reflects on the Vietnam War

PANETTA:? We can never lose sight of men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line, fight and die for America.? When the people to agree or disagree with the cause, when there are men and women willing to do that for this country, that is something, that's a strength that I hope we always appreciate and are grateful for in the future.

    The Roundtable

Obama and Romney Develop a Narrative

NIA-MALIKA HENDERSON:? In terms of talking to Republicans privately, they say they do feel like Romney hasn't quite made the transition from coming across as a very wealthy, successful businessman to being an actual job creator.? So that's I think one of the transitions that he still needs to make, really telling his narrative in story form.? He doesn't quite do that, doesn't quite talk about his Bain - you know, what you are saying, these are the four companies that I helped succeed, invested in.? So I think that's what we're going to see in these coming weeks.

BROWNSTEIN:? I think we are at a point in this election where we're right now standing with a double negative.? We don't have a majority that is convinced they want to re-elect President Obama for a second term and we do not have a majority that is convinced that they want to turn power in Washington to Republicans.

And the core argument I think that this Bain attack is designed is to effect is to basically link Romney's private experience with his public agenda and to argue that in both cases essentially he's trying to enrich the few at the expense of the many.? And as governor said, one of the big vulnerabilities that Romney has, is that in many ways his agenda looking forward is - faces significant doubt - the idea of converting Medicare into a premium support program, another 20 percent marginal tax cut. Obama wants this to be a choice as much as possible.? But the referendum inexorably is a big of it with an incumbent and on that front he is not looking at a majority today.

GRANHOLM:? And the Millennial generation, we were talking about earlier, the Millennial generation is going to, I think, create the bubble for victory for Obama.? There are 4 million Millennials that have aged into the system every single year since 2008.? That means 16 million new Millennials are available to vote.? They support the Obama administration 2 to 1 over Romney.? If only half of them vote that's a significant bubble.? Those Millennials, I think, will make a huge difference.

BROWNSTEIN:? Romney has just seemed to be spooked throughout the whole process at the thought that the right will mobilize against him.

The risk here is that, as I said, I mean, I think the key swing vote in this election are those upper middle class white voters, many of whom are somewhat disappointed in Obama economically and ideologically, but who are clearly not convinced they're ready to turn the country back to the Republicans.

Is It "Dangerous" For Romney To Engage Donald Trump in the Campaign?

WILL:? I do not understand the cost-benefit here.? The costs are clear.? The benefit, what voter is going to vote for him because he's seen with Donald Trump? The cost of appearing with this bloviating ignoramus is obvious, it seems to me.? Donald Trump is redundant evidence that if your net worth is high enough, your IQ can be very low, and you can still intrude into American politics.? But again I don't understand the benefit.? What is Romney seeking?

CLAMAN:? Well, it's a dangerous game that Mitt Romney is playing here, because Donald Trump doesn't have a lot to lose by keeping this birther conversation alive.?And that's the point.? I mean, it's to raise money.? I mean, he is, as you said before, and I'm quoting you here, Donald Trump is sort of their version of George Clooney.? Not as handsome.

CLAMAN:?President Obama and Mitt Romney, better get off the whole birther issue, the cars on dog roofs, the Bain Capital, these are side shows.? Americans care about the main act and that is jobs, the economy.? And at this point, we're not seeing enough jobs.? The economy incrementally getting better, and where are the ideas?? We better start presenting them.

New telescope to be in South Africa, Australia

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) -- Australia and South Africa will share hosting of a giant radio telescope made up of thousands of separate dishes and intended to help scientists figure out the make-up of the universe, the international consortium overseeing the project announced Friday.

South Africa led an African consortium that included Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia, and telescopes will be erected in all its partners. In South Africa, dishes will be added to a remote site in the arid Karoo desert where a smaller radio telescope project already is under way.

South Africa and Australia, which partnered with New Zealand in bidding for the project, had competed fiercely. South Africa claimed victory Friday, saying it got two of the projects three major components.

"We may feel slightly disappointed that we didn't get the whole thing. But I think one should emphasize that we did get most of it," said Justin Jonas, the chief South African scientist on the project. "Two-thirds of the biggest instrument in the world is still the biggest instrument in the world."

South Africa's science minister Naledi Pandor and scientists who had prepared the country's bid celebrated with an Africa-shaped cake at a news conference in South Africa's capital.

"This marks a real turning point in Africa, where we are becoming a destination for science and engineering, and not just a place where there are resources and tourism opportunities," Jonas added.

Australia also welcomed the split decision.

"It is an outstanding result for the Australia-New Zealand bid after many years of preparation and an intensive international process," said Sen. Chris Evans, Australia's science minister.

The Square Kilometer Array telescope will be 50 times more sensitive and scan the sky 10,000 times faster than any existing telescope. It requires huge open spaces with very few humans.

John Womersley, chair of the consortium's board, said the telescope will help scientists answer key questions: "Where do we come from? Where are we going? What is this universe we live in?"

"We don't understand what 96 percent of our universe is made of," he said.

The organization said dividing construction of the telescope will "maximize on investments already made by both Australia and South Africa."

Womersley said that splitting construction between the two nations will likely add around 10 percent to the (EURO)350 million ($439 million) cost of the first phase of building the giant telescope. But he said there would be a payoff for astronomers.

"It delivers more science in phase one. The capabilities of this instrument are greater than the original design," Womersley said.

Unleashing The Power Of Hypnosis And NLP
    By Charles Steed

creative brilliance 300x228 Unleash The Power of NLPNeuro Linguistic Programming and hypnosis are often shrouded in mystery and highly misunderstood. What are they? What can we do with them? First, they are methods for rapid behavior change in humans, tools. And like anything else under the sun, what we do with them depends on our intentions.

I?ve read Blog comments demonizing NLP because it?s sometimes used in clandestine ways to manipulate people. The person commenting went on to say that hypnosis and NLP were the work of the devil and anyone using them was wicked and not to be trusted. Those are heavy claims. Before we can understand what these wonderful tools can do for us it makes sense to first look at the relatively simple mechanics behind them.

    The Conscious & Unconscious Mind

The scientific community the world over has come to agree that people have both a conscious mind and a subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is where our beliefs, desires and attitudes dwell. Virtually any message delivered over time and by a trusted authority figure may find its way to the subconscious. But even messages we might not readily agree we need or want can also find a home in the subconscious. Repetition is the key.

To keep things simple, let?s agree that the conscious mind stands duty evaluating all input during our waking hours. It rejects unfamiliar and messages it deems to be false. Diligence by the conscious mind ensures that ideas and principles that are not congruent with our primary beliefs don?t find a home in the subconscious. For this reason I sometimes refer to the conscious mind as the gatekeeper.

So let?s use a short example to see how this information can be useful to us. I once had occasion to work with a young lady who, on the day prior to my meeting her had four wisdom teeth extracted. I was walking along at the mall as she sat on a tall stool, the cashier at a kiosk. It was obvious to me she was in distress.

I approached and asked why she looked so sad. She explained that she wasn?t sad but that she?d had her wisdom teeth pulled the day before and one of the extraction sites was causing her a great deal of pain. She explained that the dentist had given her medication but she couldn?t take it at work or when driving because it made her drowsy.

    Wanna Play Doctor?

I asked if she wanted to be rid of the pain. She looked at me with a quizzical, strained smile and asked if I was a doctor. I must admit that I fibbed and told her I was a doctor. The method I planned on using to help her required no touching and would take all of three minutes to accomplish. For this method to work it was important she believed I had the skill to do it. And since she apparently had faith in doctors I agreed to be a physician to build credibility and authority. With my answer she said she?d do anything to feel better.

Then I asked her if she could follow simple instructions. She said she could. I gave her this command: Close your eyes and while your eyes are closed, pretend you can?t open them. Now, while you?re pretending you can?t open your eyes, try to open them. I repeated it only once and she closed her eyes. And sure enough, both eyelids began to flutter as she tried but couldn?t open her eyes according to the instructions I?d delivered.

While she carried out the instructions I simply told her that her mouth was the picture of peace and tranquility. I mentioned a beautiful country setting with a still pool of soothing water. I told her that the peace and beauty of the country scene was the same peace and beauty that were now occupying her mouth. I repeated one or two such variations of peaceful and soothing suggestions and emphatically stated that her mouth would feel perfectly normal when she opened her eyes. Then I told her to open her eyes.

A pleasant smile came over her face right away. She brought her hand up to her slightly swollen cheek and felt it. I could see she was sweeping her tongue throughout her mouth sort of testing for pain. And then she said the pain was completely gone and asked what I?d done. I said we?d simply gone through a little guided meditation routine. She smiled warmly and thanked me.

    Fooling The Gatekeeper

Why did this little exercise work? Remember the conscious and subconscious minds. The subconscious mind will accept anything the conscious mind allows in. That means I had to get the conscious mind, the gatekeeper, out of the way before I could deliver the pain-free suggestions. Had I simply started by saying, your mouth is the picture of peace and tranquility, the conscious mind would have said, NO WAY! My mouth hurts like hell.

That?s why I gave her the little eye exercise to do. Give it a try. Close your eyes and while they?re closed, pretend you can?t open them. Now, while you?re pretending you can?t open your eyes, try to open them. That set of instructions keeps the gatekeeper just busy enough so it doesn?t really notice I?m introducing an idea that?s incongruous with the reality of pain. And once those suggestions are comfortable in the subconscious, the brain accepts that the pain is gone. Could it really be so simple? Yes. It?s just that simple.

What I?ve just described is know as waking hypnosis. The subject was never in danger as she could have easily stopped ?following simple instructions? at any time she pleased. But look at how powerful that little technique was. It transformed a suffering person into a person with a pleasant smile, pain free. What was the mechanism? We tricked her conscious mind. We kept it busy while we installed the idea of pain-free peace.

Just A Glimpse Of The Power Of NLP

Here?s the point: Whatever you can get the subconscious to accept will become real in your day-to-day life. Can you see the potential in that? People spend tons of money and years in therapy when they can often make rapid and lasting change inside of a very short session. Waking hypnosis is powerful but it?s just the tip of the iceberg.

The more common or well know method of hypnosis is one where the deep relaxation induction is used. But such measures are often not necessary because NLP practitioners have developed far more subtle and fast-acting techniques that are just as effective.

And to address the Blog comment I opened this piece with about NLP being the devil?s work I?ll say this. Nothing under the sun is good or evil. It?s what people do with things that make them either beneficial or dangerous. Electricity can cook your food or it can cook your goose. It all depends on how you use it. Here?s to using NLP and hypnosis for all the good it can bring!
