Getting your first higher education job as an online adjunct

One thing to consider with online adjunct jobs is that you are competing against the whole world.? Rather than being limited by geography, as we are with traditional jobs, we are only limited by time.? There are instructors who excel at teaching and teaching efficient. The conversation regarding factory line education we'll leave for another day.? Today we look at getting your first adjunct faculty job.?

The minimum requirement for getting any adjunct faculty job is 18 graduate hours in the subject you will teach along with a masters degree.? Mind you this is the minimum qualification to just be consider for college jobs, however, often you will need much more.? Please, do not be disheartened by this, as with any endeavor worthwhile, it is tough, but worth it.

The first step for many adjunct professors is getting a job as a traditional classroom instructor.? It is much easier and because of geography you won't be competing against everyone.? The best thing to do at this point is to review the local colleges for jobs.? There are often many community college jobs available as well as jobs at private two year programs (think ITT Tech).? Often, just a few months of experience in the traditional classroom is enough to break into online teaching.

I applied to well over 100 online schools before I found my first online adjunct faculty position.? The key as you are applying to these jobs is volume.? While you do want to follow the traditional protocol of customizing your cover letter, you will probably need to apply to many schools before you get your first job.

You can scour the web for online colleges and online community college jobs, or you can sign up for the job list on this website.? Either way, apply to anything that you are qualified for, higher education jobs, especially those online, are very competitive.

Once you get the initial contact from the college, which can take some time, you will be well on your way to finding your first adjunct faculty position.? Just remember to be patient and persistent, your hard work will pay off.
