T-Mobile today unveiled the Concord, a no-contract Android device aimed at people looking to pick up their first smartphone.
The 3G smartphone is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and provides basic Web surfing, Google Maps location searching, and access to social networks, according to T-Mobile.
The Concord comes in a midnight-blue finish, and features a 3.5-inch touch-screen display and 2-megapixel rear-facing camera.
The Concord is now available at Walmart for $99.98 with a Walmart Family Mobile plan. T-Mobile expects it to hit Target on Aug. 26 for $99.99 with a qualifying T-Mobile Monthly4G plan.
Despite the name of the plan, Monthly4G does not provide 4G LTE service on the Concord, but it does provide unlimited talk and text, as well as "worry free" data, T-Mobile said.
On Sept. 5, T-Mobile's new unlimited mobile data plans go into effect. As PCMag lead mobile analyst Sascha Segan pointed out, T-Mobile has indeed always provided an "unlimited" plan, which didn't charge users overages, but capped speeds beyond your plan limit. The new system provides truly unlimited data to talk, text, and surf the Web for $69.99 without a subsidized phone, or $89.99 with one.
"Unlimited data, for T-Mobile, is all about shifting the mix from prepaid back to postpaid," Segan said, "using some of that extra network capacity it has to grab more reliable subscribers than the 'Monthly 4G' folks it's signing up in droves."
