INTERN, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

The business development team at Slate is charged with finding new businesses and ways of generating additional revenue for the company. The main focus of this job is to help Slate build out our metrics and analytics for existing or soon to be launched digital businesses.? At Slate, we?re small, nimble and constantly seeking new ideas.Therefore, we need someone who?s both creative and analytical to join our team.?
Essential duties include:
- You?ll apply your ability to analyze data and translate that data into meaningful findings.? This could be looking at our mobile audience to determine what products/content generate the most revenue or it could be helping us identify new products and services for our most frequent users
- You?ll be working with senior members of the organization to identify what?s working, what isn?t and how we can grow our business
- You?ll present findings, analyze trends and identify opportunities for growth and change
- You will have direction and support but the freedom to come up with your own ideas and propose them internally
- You?ll get the opportunity to identify, research and propose new business ventures for Slate to pursue.
Additional Info: This is an unpaid internship for students who will receive academic credit. A great opportunity for those seeking to experience and understand our business in order to make better-informed career decisions. You must be able to provide proof that this will count towardacademic credit from an accredited university.?This is a 10-12 week summer internship (May-August).
SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR
We?re looking for an experienced Unix/Linux systems administrator to manage our systems. The best systems administrators are those that know that if they?re in the spotlight, they?re not doing their job correctly. We want somebody with the ability to identify and implement improvements to our process and infrastructure so that our editorial team and our readers never know that Slate has a top notch systems administrator. We want a systems administrator who doesn?t get called in the middle of the night because he or she has worked with the development team to ensure that systems run smoothly, are monitored properly, and have built-in redundancy. We also want somebody who will gladly take the occasional overnight phone call due to pride of work.
Essential duties include:
- Analyzing existing infrastructure and identifying weak links and areas for improvement
- Managing backups and restore tests
- Developing standard virtual machine images
- Deploying and taking down instances and storage on Amazon Web Services as needed
- Working with development teams to develop policies which accommodate needs for both system stability and development flexibility
- Documenting systems and processes
Bachelor?s degree or related work experience in systems administration, programming, or a related field.
- Solid experience administering Linux systems
- Experience with Amazon Web Services
- Experience with high-traffic web sites
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
- Strong organizational and analytical skills
- ?Experience with java-based web applications

PROJECT MANAGER
Interested in conceiving and creating the next generation digital magazine? ?Slate is looking for an organized, entrepreneurially-minded person to manage the day-to-day development of software-related projects and lead technical initiatives from start to finish. ?This role will require a unique candidate who can combine project management organizational skills with a product manager?s talent for understanding of how people engage with news and information in a social, mobile world. ?It is also an added value if this candidate can thrive in a high email traffic environment, being able to prioritize what needs to be responded to in a critical fashion in a helpful and reliable way. ?You'll need to move fast, be bold, take risks, and find the right balance of art and science.
This is a big challenge that comes with the chance to have big impact on a small, entrepreneurial team. ?You'll work with some of the smartest people in the media and technology world.
- Lead daily scrum meetings and weekly senior staff priorities meetings
- Develop relationships across the company to ensure all priorities are being backlogged and subsequently prioritized based on company goals
- Ability to balance managing medium to long-term projects while handling the occasional fire-drill and small project needs
- Lead projects in a transparent and productive way, applying standard project management practices
- Manage weekly deployments including leading quality assurance efforts
- Lead the ideation, technical development and launch of web and native applications for mobile devices

WEB PROGRAMMER
We?re looking for an experienced web programmer to help us improve the experience for the millions of visitors who read our site. We need a user-experience oriented, JavaScript-loving, front end programmer.?? ?We want somebody who can analyze the content, interpret the traffic statistics, and implement design and functionality changes that produce results. In addition, this person will help create unique interactive features to accompany Slate?s articles.
Essential duties include:
- Implementing new features, interactive content, and optimizations in JavaScript
- Inspecting and analyzing pages delivered to our readers for ways to improve page delivery
- Recommending and implementing changes
- Working with back-end programmers to integrate front-end changes into system templates
- Participate in meetings with non-technical staff regarding user experience, site design and interactive editorial content.
- Some image and design work
Bachelor?s degree or related work experience in programming, web design, or a related field.
- Strong skills with jQuery and/or other JavaScript frameworks
- Experience with considerations needed when building sites for mobile devices
- Experience with tools for analyzing and diagnosing web page performance
- Experience working with PHP, JSP, ASP or other dynamic web templating technologies
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
- Strong organizational and analytical skills?
- Experience creating plugins for jQuery
- Experience with Photoshop
