From Israel to Pakistan, Community is Key When Building a Startup (Google I/O)

google I/O startups

Google I/O: It?s a startup world

In my previous post, I covered the funding aspect of entrepreneurship, but there?s more to innovation than money. To achieve the trifecta of startup success (money, talent, ideas), a vibrant startup community can make the difference between success and failure. In this Google I/O session, ?It?s a Startup World?, moderated by my talented colleague Bridgette Sexton, a panel of?international startup community leaders shared some of the best practices from their experience. ?The panel included Erik Hersman (Kenya ,founder of iHub), Eden Shochat (Israel, founder of Face.com, VC at Genesis, founder of The Junction), Jon Bradford (UK/Ireland, founder of Springboard), Jeffery Paine (Singapore, Golden Gate Ventures) and Jehan Ara (Pakistan). Below are the highlights from the panel as well as some interesting audience questions.?

Bridgette: Eden, what made you start the junction?

  • Eden- we have mandatory service in the army (18-21). It created awesome companies, but the army doesn?t do ecommerce, or much?mobile, which are now the biggest growth engines in startups. When I moved to VC, I found out that there were no good consumer internet startups. They were sporadic.?The Junctionwas a prototype. We ask applicants 3 questions:
    • Are you working on the venture full time
    • Is the entire team going to work together?
    • are you willing to spend 10% working on other people?s startup.
  • The junction is all about creating a pay it forward model. We don?t care about short term revenue. We ask nothing from the companies, we just want them to help each other. In a B2C

Bridgette: Jon, you run several accelerator programs. What do you see your programs producing??

  • Jon -London has 250 nationalities, the next one on the list is New York with 150. We attract great global talent.?I very strongly believe that no geographic region has a monopoly on entrepreneurship. The valley is full with fellow?travelers, it?s a big advantage as you have to create?critical?mass to have a successful cluster.

Bridgette Sexton, Erik Hersman, Eden Shochat, Jon Bradford, Jeffery Paine, Jehan Ara

Bridgette:?What are you investing in South East Asia at Golden Gate Ventures??

  • Jeff ? we look at mobile, consumer Internet, games and SaaS. Singapore is a developed country, and we?re right smack in the middle of developing countries. The challenges are many for Singaporean entrepreneurs: they tend to think very small and very local. We are missing a layer of mentors that ?been there, done that?, not 10 years ago though. Cause technology changes very fast. We need current role models. ?My last investment?is an enterprise company from Malaysia that went global from day one. There?s pressure to make money fast to survive quickly, so innovation takes a second seat.

Bridgette: Eric,?What is the role of ihub in the community??

  • Eric ? we had a vibrant tech culture, but there was no central space. we have 8,000 members now, in Nairobi. How are you going to measure success? ?if we put enough smart people in the room good things will happen?. You have to experiment in a market like this, because you don?t know what will work. Some of them got funding, when you?re in a nacent market, you?re builidng the market.?For us it?s about bringing people together. Testing if ?we can apply the accelerator model from the Bay Area to Africa.
  • Eden ? I wanted to add the purpose of The Junction ? team building. The most important thing for every?entrepreneur?is to be able to convince the team of what they?should?do before they have funding. Geekcon brings people together to build stuff. The purpose is to build useless projects.

Bridgette: Jehan, how is Pakistan unique as a market??

  • Jehan ? in Pakistan, we have 120 million mobile subscribers. The scale of users is just much bigger. The?P@SHA SIF Fund that we run, is a social entrepreneurship fund. With very little sums of money, $2,000 per company that passed the screening process, we are able to support various teams with a very small amount of money. Startups that target Pakistan can tap into a huge audience, with a relatively low investment, say $10,000. We started with unique projects to the local market with the first projects we funded. An Audible in Urdu (the national language), a marketplace for handmade leather shoes and Bloodline, a blood transfusion community, which is a big need in hospitals.

Bridgette:?Why do you do a lot of small seed investments vs fewer, bigger rounds?

  • Jon ? I used to do a lot of seed investment. when I wrote people a big cheque, they stressed out on metrics from day 1.?When I wrote people small cheuques, the first thing they do, is go talk to a customers.?In Bulgaria, where I?m involved in a new fund, it?s a desert. There?s lots of entrepreneurship and little funding. So in the next 3 years, we?re going to fund 200 teams to take forward their ideas of products.?The approach is throwing a lot of shit on the wall and seeing what sticks.?I call it the?entrepreneurial?compost team. Just because you failed, it doesn?t make you bad. You?re retaining the knowledge of your previous experience.?We want to embrace cultures that embrace that attitude, where it?s ok to fail.

Bridgette:- In Israel there?s lot of money. you have opportunity to get series A, why seed??

  • Eden ? the way that VC works, is that you have to deploy quite a lot of capital. If you run a $100 m fund, you are expected to create $300 million.?The VC typically owns 25% of the value of its portfolio, so he needs to exceed $1.2 billion in exits to be able to enjoy the carry of the fund. So the amounts that a VC has to deploy have to be fairly big for the investment to matter to the fund?s bottom line. I?ll give you an example. A startup that made?Internet based insoles, for shoes. The guy needed $100,000. The amount of money that I made as a VC is insignificant, even if he sells the company for $10 million.?I think the model needs to be different. ?VCs should reduce the cost of entrepreneurship and make sure that people fail fast ? if the idea succeeds, we can get you the money.?Don?t take anything, give them the value they need to build a company ($20K, office space,)?create a community.

Officers in Mexico airport drug ring identified

Mexican authorities have identified two federal police officers who shot dead three of their colleagues at Mexico City's international airport this week and say the shooters were part of a trafficking ring that flew in cocaine from Peru.

Luis Cardenas Palomino, the federal police's regional security chief, said Thursday that the slain officers were trying to arrest officer Zeferino Morales Franco at the food court of the airport's Terminal 2 when agent Daniel Cruz Garcia arrived and shot the arresting officers from behind.

Authorities are also looking for a third officer, Bogard Felipe Lugo de Leon, who is the suspects' supervisor and who abandoned his post at the airport shortly after the shooting, Palomino said. The three remain at large.

The government is offering a $360,000 reward leading to the capture of the officers, who Palomino described as "traitors."

Photographs on Lugo's Facebook page show him holding a high-powered rifle and handguns, and posing in front of his patrol car or a federal police airplane. He also has photos of himself carrying a baby girl he identifies as his 7-month-old daughter.

Lugo's comments on his Facebook page seem to suggest he was recently assigned to Mexico City's airport and that before then he was in the resort city of Cancun.

Palomino said that for several months authorities had been investigating a cocaine trafficking ring that involved passengers arriving from Peru's capital, Lima. He said other government officials working at the airport are involved but didn't identify them.

"We know there must be other authorities involved in trafficking and that's what we are investigating," he said.

Passengers would allegedly bring cocaine hidden on their body or in their luggage, and drop it off in bathrooms before reaching the immigration and customs check area.

Corrupt officials would then circle back to pick up the drugs, Palomino said.

The federal Public Safety Department had conducted an 18-month investigation into corrupt federal police officers and other officials who were part of the alleged cocaine trafficking ring. The operation has seized 648 pounds (294 kilograms) of cocaine at the airport, Palomino said.

Since January, seven passengers arriving from Lima have been detained carrying cocaine, he added.

On Monday, the day of the shooting, federal officers watching surveillance cameras saw Morales go into a bathroom shortly after the arrival of a flight from Lima. Two officers approached Morales once he was in the food court area and told their boss in a radio call that he was carrying drugs; that's when the officers were attacked, Palomino said.

A third officer who was nearby for support fired at the attackers but he was wounded and later died at a hospital, he said.

The shooting sent terrified people waiting for their flights diving to the floor for protection.

Palomino said Morales and Garcia got away in a taxi. He said phone records show Morales called Lugo as he was leaving the airport.

Surveillance cameras captured Lugo leaving in his own car, he said.

Mind - Body Psychotherapy: Heartburn and GERD

Mind - Body Psychotherapy: Heartburn and GERD

Heartburn and GERD

If you?ve been diagnosed with acid reflux or have frequent heartburn and thought you had to give up all of the foods you love, there is good news. A study conducted at Stanford University reports that there is ?insufficient evidence? that avoiding chocolate, spicy foods, mint, citrus, fatty foods, carbonated beverages, or coffee will relieve GERD-associated heartburn.
?If you know that a certain food causes symptoms, you can steer clear of it, but most people do not need to avoid every common trigger across the board. A better course of action for relief is weight loss. Even three to five pounds can make a difference.

FDA approves drug to treat some obese, overweight adults | Health ...

Some people who suffer from chronic weight issues may soon get some help from a pill.? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Wednesday approved Belviq, or lorcaserin hydrochloride, to be combined with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise, for treatment of chronic weight problems. Specifically, the FDA says,?it is approved for overweight or obese adults who have one or more medical conditions due to their weight, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. The FDA says the drug works by activating a receptor in the brain that helps a person to eat less and still feel full. In trials, 47% of patients without type 2 diabetes lost at least?5% of their body weight.?By comparison,?23% of patients?treated with placebo lost at least 5% of their weight. In people with?type 2 diabetes, 38% of patients on Belviq lost at least?5% of their body weight compared to 16% on placebo, according to the FDA. "The results overall are quite modest," said Dr. Melina Jampolis , a physician nutrition specialist and CNN's diet and fitness expert. "But most experts agree that even a 5% weight loss has significant implications in terms of reducing the risk of obesity associated diseases including heart disease and diabetes." The FDA says the manufacturer of Belviq, Arena Pharmaceuticals, will be required to conduct six postmarketing?studies, including a long term cardiovascular trial to assess the risk of heart attack and stroke. CNNMoney: Arena surges on weight loss drug approval The most common side effects of Belviq in non-diabetic patients include headache, dizziness and fatigue; and in diabetic patients low blood sugar and pain, according to the FDA. Apple releases its own Podcasts app for iOS devices

Apple releases its own Podcasts app for iOS

We've had some indication that podcasts would be receiving an app of their own with iOS 6, but it looks like we won't have to wait that long after all. Apple has just released a new standalone app dubbed simply "Podcasts," which is available for iOS devices running version 5.1 or later. It expectedly offers a variety of ways to browse and discover podcasts among the thousands available (including a new Top Stations feature that groups select podcasts by category), as well as the ability to either stream episodes or download them for offline use. The app is also optimized for the iPad in addition to the iPhone, and it's thankfully able to sync podcasts with iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC (just be sure to upgrade to iTunes 10.6.3 first). No charge for this one, either.

Apple releases its own Podcasts app for iOS devices originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 13:41:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Complex thinking behind the bow and arrow

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? University of T?bingen and South African researchers have revealed sophisticated design and technology developed by early humans.

The bow and arrow have long been regarded as a possible indicator of culture in prehistoric times. Bows and arrows appear to have been in use for some 64,000 years, given evidence from South Africa. Until recently, their significance in human cognitive ability was unclear. Now two researchers have been able to decode the conceptual foundations of the bow and arrow. The results of the study, by Miriam Haidle of the Heidelberg Academy's ROCEEH project (sponsored by the Senckenberg Research Institute) and the University of T?bingen and Marlize Lombard of the University of Johannesburg, appear in the latest edition of the Cambridge Archaeological Journal.

Using archaeological finds and ethnological parallels, the two researchers reconstructed the steps needed to make a bow and arrows. These are complimentary tools -- separate, but developed interdependently. The bow is the controlling element, while the arrows can be used more flexibly and are interchangeable. About 2.5 million years ago, humans first used tools to make other tools then to make tools assembled from different parts to make a unit with particular qualities, such as wooden spears with stone spearheads (ca. 200,000-300,000 years ago.) The bow and arrow and other complementary tool sets made it possible for prehistoric humans to greatly increase the flexibility of their reactions.

There are many basic complementary tool sets: needle and thread, fishing rod and line, hammer and chisel. The bow and arrow are a particularly complex example. The reconstruction of the technique shows that no less than ten different tools are needed to manufacture a simple bow and arrows with foreshafts. It takes 22 raw materials and three semi-finished goods (binding materials, multi-component glue) and five production phases to make a bow, and further steps to make the arrows to go with it. The study was able to show a high level of complexity in the use of tools at an early stage in the history of homo sapiens.

The Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities project "The Role of Culture in Early Expansions of Humans" (ROCEEH) incorporates archaeologists, paleoanthropologists, palaeobiologists and geographers, working together to find out where the first humans arose, where they moved to in Africa and Eurasia, and why. The project covers the time between three million years ago and the last glacial maximum 20,000 years ago. The focus is on when, where, and in what form a changing climate, evolution and cultural development of early humans enabled them to expand the behavioral niche of a large primate within Africa and to find new roles outside of Africa. The University of T?bingen and the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt have been cooperating on this 20-year Heidelberg Academy project since 2008.

Cities' efforts to make exercise easier pays off

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fitness is often a combination of personal choice and environmental support, experts say, and a ranking of the 50 healthiest U.S. cities seems to reinforce the theory.

High rates of physical activity helped to propel Minneapolis-St. Paul to the top of the list of the American College of Sports Medicine's 2012 American Fitness Index (AFI) for the second year in a row, while raised obesity levels and smoking pushed Oklahoma City to the bottom.

"When I say Minneapolis ranked No. 1, people give me an 'are you kidding me' kind of look," said Walter Thompson, the chairman of the AFI Advisory Board. "Between November 1 and April 1 they have cold and snow, but they've addressed that."

Thompson said the solution was a proliferation of exercise studios that dot main streets, and a local government that has invested resources in park lands.

When people in Minneapolis were asked if they had any physical activity in last 30 days, he said 82.9 percent said they had.

The index, which considered factors ranging from the number of tennis courts to the percentage of smokers, relied on information from federal government data, such as Centers for Disease Control and U.S. Census reports, as well as information from the 50 cities.

Washington, D.C., Boston, San Francisco, and Hartford in Connecticut were the five fittest, healthiest metro areas, while Birmingham, Dallas, Texas, Louisville, Detroit, Michigan and Oklahoma City fared the poorest.

"A couple of cities have made significant improvements," said Thompson about the rankings, which began in 2008. "A policy decision can dramatically impact environmental indicators, like smoking bans or bicycle lane ordinances."

New York City, ranked 22, climbed eight spots since 2011, while Nashville, at 27, gained 10 and Las Vegas climbed four spots to 39.

Shirley Archer, a spokeswoman for the American Council on Exercise, said studies show that many environmental factors affect how physically active people are in their communities.

"The more available green spaces, the more likely kids and adults are to enjoy that outdoor space, so simply having more parks and playgrounds makes a huge difference," said Archer. "If you add walking, jogging or biking paths, people will use them."

Connecticut-based exercise physiologist and running coach Tom Holland also believes that if you build it, they will come.

He said last year his home town of New Canaan, in Connecticut, filled holes and covered up tree roots and rocks on a popular public park trail to make it safer for running.

"Stimulus money that went to fixing/repaving roads has made running and biking on them much safer and more fun," he said.

With an obesity rate of over 31 percent and almost 23 percent of residents still smoking, according to the index, Louisville's 48th place ranking does not surprise Kathy Harrison, communications director for Louisville Metro Public Health & Wellness.

But she's optimistic about the future.

"I really feel like we mirror a lot of the country. We have quite a few problems when it comes to health," Harrison said. "But since 2004 we've been making quite few changes."

Initiatives include bringing farmers markets into so-called food deserts, which Harrison defines as low-income areas saturated with fast-food options but short on public transportation choices.

"We're also working with convenience stores to become healthier," she said. "We'll assist them if they meet certain criteria."

Projects are also under way to dramatically increase the biking/hiking trails around Louisville.

"We're a working on a ?road diet,' taking highways from four lanes to three," Harrison said about the project to accommodate and encourage more foot and bicycle traffic.

"We've created some fun events to promote fitness. We have natural amenities," Harrison said. "Promoting a sense of fun brings people to them."

Sales Leads: How to Create a Lead Management Process

Last updated 8 hours 16 minutes ago

An important part of any marketing strategy is creating a process to track and monitor new sales leads, which are people who show interest in your products and services. By setting up a basic lead management process for the leads you capture through your marketing efforts, you can keep track of where your leads are coming from and accurately measure the effectiveness of your marketing. Here are a simple few tips to get started with lead management for your business.

Track the Source of Your Leads

A vital part of the process of handling your sales leads is to make sure that you track where those leads are coming from. This task will help the overall effectiveness of your online and offline advertising efforts because you?ll have a clear understanding of which marketing tactics are driving the most customers to your business. One simple way to do this is to simply ask prospects how they heard about your business once they contact you. Additionally, you can use analytics software on your website to monitor the sources of online leads. Another option for tracking leads is to use a call tracking number or tracking URL that you can place on your offline or online advertising, so when people contact you via those methods, you can track which marketing brought them to your business. Then, you can use this insight to shift your marketing investment toward the types of efforts that bring you the most customers.

Monitor & Respond to Social Media Channels

Social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google Plus have become great new sources of potential leads for your business. It?s important to monitor social media regularly and follow up with consumers who are leaving comments on your page, tweeting you publicly, or sending you direct messages. If someone expresses interest in your product or service or contacts you directly via social media, ask them to contact you via email or phone so you can get more information about what they?re interested in, and collect their contact information so you can follow up. In addition, you can use social media pages as a source of information about your target market, like their demographics, interests, and expectations from your business. ?

Set Up Notifications of New Leads

To take your lead management strategy to the next level, you can invest in a service that provides real-time lead notifications, such as an email or SMS message, when you receive a new lead. New leads could be generated from a ?a form submission, email, voicemail, or chat lead. Notifications let you know as soon as a lead comes in, provide a record of the lead, and ensure you can respond promptly to close the sale.?In fact, after the first hour, the chances of reaching a lead are reduced by 10 times.?

Record Your Calls

Recording calls to your business is an easy way to track and store incoming sales leads. Many?call recording technologies?not only let you record the live call itself, but also capture data such as caller ID, date, and time, so you have a full picture of the call and caller. Plus, the ability to record calls can also provide additional business insight, such as whether or not your team is effectively answering the phone, ?trends about what customers are calling about, and issues or feedback about your products or services, so you can make adjustments where needed.

Organize Your Database

Whether you?re entering leads into a CRM system or managing them in your own spreadsheet, it?s important to?keep your lead data clean?and organized. First, determine what data you want to capture, like name, email, phone, and lead source, so that you?re always recording the same type of information for each lead. In addition, you should regularly check your list and remove duplicate leads, make sure contact information is complete and up-to-date, and keep track of all interactions with the prospect so that you can pace out how often you want to reach out again ?to existing customers and active leads you?ve already contacted.?

Once you have a solid process in place for managing new sales leads, it?s important to tie any sales you make back to the original lead to accurately measure the ultimate ROI of your marketing investment. By documenting this process, you?ll have a better idea of which marketing investments have the biggest impact on your business.?

What lead management strategies has your business implemented, and which do you plan on adding? Let us know in a comment!

Pasha Adam: In Defense of Weeds

2012-06-24-weedss7finale.jpg

Weeds is a show that seldom gets the credit it deserves. When it premiered in 2005, Weeds's immediate critical and commercial success helped establish the viability of a new kind of half-hour dramedy, one that has since become a staple of premium cable.

Creator Jenji Kohan managed to construct a template that allowed for a comedic exploration of serious subject matter, underpinned by a dedicated character study of Weeds's anti-heroine Nancy Botwin. While this template has been applied to other shows to various degrees of critical and commercial success to shows like Californication, United States of Tara, Nurse Jackie and House of Lies it certainly marks a refreshing change from the traditional expectations of what a comedy and a drama should be.

Weeds was a comedy that didn't rely on a joke every twenty seconds. And it was a drama that didn't have to be earnest with constant stakes -- not that it lacked them. It is because of this that Weeds probably lost a few fans along the way. Most who prefer the earlier seasons cite the show's move away from the satire of suburban living as a reason why. When the show exhausted the suburbs and moved beyond them, exploring other areas of the drug business and began peeling back the layers of Nancy Botwin's character, many became disgruntled that the show had changed. As quick as TV viewers are to turn their back on a show for staying the same, they're even quicker to jump ship when it changes.

It was more than just the change to the show's premise that upset people though. t was the perceived changes in Nancy Botwin herself. People claimed she got more and more selfish as the show went on and was no longer the sympathetic suburban widow, selling weed to support her family, that she was in the first season. First, I've never been one who has to like, sympathize or empathize with a character to find them compelling -- it's nice to like them, don't get me wrong, but it's not a must (and in this instance, I do like Nancy Botwin). Let's look at Nancy Botwin in perspective. Her husband dies and she starts selling weed to make money. She was never, ever your 'everywoman' protagonist. The vast majority of widowers don't turn to illegal activities to make ends meet. Selling drugs isn't a normal reaction to losing a husband. And from that I extrapolate that Nancy Botwin was never a normal person.

I think the show should be praised for digging beneath the surface of its lead character to explain her behavior. And I think the slow reveal that Nancy was always a self-centered danger junkie during season five was a stroke of genius. This subverted our opinions of the more restrained Nancy we met in season one, who by all accounts had been subdued by fifteen years of living an happy life as a suburban housewife. It didn't take long after her husband's death for Nancy to free herself from the constraints of normalcy and return to her old ways. This was a gradual process that begun with her becoming a drug dealer and took full effect when she deeply involved herself, personally and professionally, with a Mexican crime syndicate in season four.

Weeds has always been a tragedy. And not because it's about a woman who tried to support her family after the untimely, sudden death of her husband. No, it's tragedy lies in the fact that Nancy Botwin is still struggling to keep her family together in spite of her true nature. The main conflict in Weeds isn't generated by law enforcement, rival dealers, Mexican crime syndicates or mysterious snipers; instead the main conflict is far more universal and it's Nancy's desire to be the good mother/person she knows she can be versus a compulsion to be the self-centered, danger junkie she actually is. It's a shift between external conflicts, which are easier for viewers to monitor, and internal conflicts, which are less easy to follow -- unless clearly signposted by the writers -- and less easy to sympathize with as viewers develop a "get over it" mentality towards the characters (see: House and Buffy season six and seven). Breaking Bad gets away with focusing on Walter White's internal struggle because it was built into the show from the pilot, whereas with Weeds it didn't take the forefront until much later and so many of its existing viewers were unable to adapt to the paradigm shift. (And make no mistake about it, Vince Gilligan pre-empted Internet backlash by divulging/spoiling the Mr Chips to Scarface arc for Walter White early on. If he hadn't, people would've bitched about that show in droves from the season two finale onwards.)

Returning to Weeds, the focus on Nancy's internal conflict was most clear in season five when her indecisiveness, passivity and poor decision-making took the forefront. As frustrating as this may be for viewers to watch, it's a valid character arc for writers to explore as long as the writers are aware of it and the Weeds writers always have been. Granted, some shows aren't as self-aware of this internal struggle as Weeds and subsequently fail to address it, stretching an audience's patience for that kind of storytelling (see: Veronica Mars season two and three, Californication, Dexter, Nip/Tuck).

With this in mind, Weeds embarks on its final season this coming Sunday. Nancy Botwin and her family are returning to the suburbs and I'm looking forward to seeing how the Botwins, and Nancy in particular, re-adjust to suburban living after everything that's happened after they left Agrestic. If you became disenchanted with Weeds at any point during the last few years but are going to tune in for the final season, I'd like to ask you to try watching it from a different perspective. Weeds never stopped being a good show; it just became a different kind of good show.

Rate of severe reactions higher than thought in young children with food allergies

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Young children with allergies to milk and egg experience reactions to these and other foods more often than researchers had expected, a study reports. The study also found that severe and potentially life-threatening reactions in a significant number of these children occur and that some caregivers are hesitant to give such children epinephrine, a medication that reverses the symptoms of such reactions and can save lives.

"This study reinforces the importance of doctors, parents and other caregivers working together to be even more vigilant in managing food allergy in children," said Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health.

The study results appear online in the June 25 issue of Pediatrics and are the latest findings from the Consortium of Food Allergy Research (CoFAR), a network established by NIAID to conduct clinical trials, observational studies and basic research to better understand and treat food allergy.

The research is part of an ongoing CoFAR observational study that enrolled 512 infants aged 3 to 15 months who at study entry were allergic to milk or egg, or who were likely to be allergic, based on a positive skin test and the presence of moderate-to-severe eczema, a chronic skin condition. The investigators are carefully following these children to see whether their allergies resolve or if new allergies, particularly peanut allergy, develop. The study is ongoing at research hospitals in Baltimore; Denver; Durham, N.C.; Little Rock, Ark.; and New York City.

CoFAR investigators advised parents and caregivers to avoid giving their children foods that could cause an allergic reaction. Study participants also received an emergency action plan, describing the symptoms of a severe allergic reaction to food and what to do if a child has one, along with a prescription and instructions on how to give epinephrine if a severe reaction occurred.

Data compiled from patient questionnaires and clinic visits over three years showed that 72 percent of the children had a food-allergic reaction, and that 53 percent of the children had more than one reaction, with the majority of reactions being to milk, egg or peanut. This translated into a rate of nearly 1 food-allergic reaction per child per year. Approximately 11 percent of the reactions were classified as severe and included symptoms such as swelling in the throat, difficulty breathing, a sudden drop in blood pressure, dizziness or fainting. Almost all of the severe reactions were caused by ingestion of the allergen rather than inhalation or skin contact.

In only 30 percent of the severe reactions did caregivers administer epinephrine, a drug that alleviates the symptoms of severe reactions by increasing heart rate, constricting blood vessels and opening the airways. Investigators found that caregivers did not give children epinephrine for a number of reasons: the drug was not available, they were too afraid to administer it, they did not recognize the symptoms as those of an allergic reaction, or they did not recognize the reaction as severe.

"This study documenting the natural history of allergic reactions to three of the major food allergens in pre-school children provides important new information for parents, caregivers and health care workers because of the large number of children involved and the rigorous follow-up," said Daniel Rotrosen, M.D., director of the NIAID Division of Allergy, Immunology and Transplantation, which oversees CoFAR. "The findings not only reveal that food-allergic reactions occur at a much higher rate in young children than we thought, they also suggest that more vigilance and increased use of epinephrine is needed."

Almost 90 percent of allergic reactions to egg, milk or peanut occurred after a child accidentally ate the food. The reasons for the accidental exposures included caregivers misreading food labels, not checking a food for an allergen, and unintentionally allowing a food allergen to come into contact with other foods (cross-contamination).

The study also found that approximately 11 percent of allergic reactions to egg, milk or peanut occurred after a caregiver -- most often a parent -- provided a child the allergenic food intentionally.

"Intentional exposures to allergenic food are typically reported in teenagers, who tend to take more risks or who might be embarrassed about their food allergy," says David Fleischer, M.D., the lead study author. "What is troubling is that in this study we found that a significant number of young children received allergenic foods from parents who were aware of the allergy."

CoFAR investigators are exploring possible reasons for these intentional exposures, but they speculate that it could reflect parents' at-home tests to determine if children have outgrown the food allergy. Because giving children allergenic foods could possibly result in life-threatening reactions, such testing should only be conducted under the direct supervision of a health care professional trained in performing food challenges. The study findings reinforce the importance of caregivers working closely with their doctors to understand how to effectively manage a child's food allergy.

Carly Rae Jepsen Featured in Billboard, Shocked by Success

She's been number-one on the Billboard music chart, so it's only nature that Carly Rae Jepsen would now be featured on the cover of Billboard magazine.

Carly Rae Jepsen Billboard Magzine Cover

In the publication's latest issue, the wildly successful singer - she sings "Call Me Maybe," perhaps you've of it? - opens up about her recent professional journey - from struggling artist... to Justin Bieber record label signee... to top of the music world in a matter of months - and expresses nothing but shock.

“Pretty much every day, there’s a moment where I’m having to pinch myself and think, ‘When did this happen to my life?’” Carly says.

But it doesn't sound like Jepsen has let her tidal wave of fame and fortune go to her head. She adds that she still appreciates the nuances of song writing.

“What I really love about [music] is that, despite all this craziness the creative process remains the same. And that same exciting feeling that I had before anybody knew me, when I was just beginning to work on ‘Call Me Maybe,’ is the same feeling I had today with RedFoo from LMFAO.

"You can sense the people who really have it are about writing that right word or that right melody to make it lift and make you feel that perfect emotion.”

Jepsen has come out with a new song. She teams with Owl City on "Good Time." Take a listen now!

Madison accepting development proposals for Union Corners

A blighted piece of land along one of Madison's busiest streets could soon see new life.
/>

Union Corners -- on East Washington Avenue at Milwaukee Street -- is considered by many to be the gateway to downtown Madison.
/>

But for nearly eight years, the 11-acre Union Corners site has sat vacant.
/>

Big ideas have been proposed in past years, but the sluggish economy curbed development plans.
/>

What is finally moving things forward, however, is a development about a mile and a half up the road -- the former Don Miller car dealership site.
/>

"We had an opportunity to learn from the 700 and 800 blocks," Madison Mayor Paul Soglin said. "That, combined with the fact that we had some inquiries earlier in the spring about Union Corners, that told us it's time to move."
/>

Lou Host-Jablonski, chairman of the Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara Neighborhood Association, said it's exciting news.
/>

"The neighborhood is looking forward to this new process with anticipation and also with some trepidation," Host-Jablonski said.
/>

The RFP bidding process has begun for Union Corners, and the city has officially started accepting development proposals.
/>

The city of Madison purchased the property a few years ago as part of a land bank fund, and it is now hoping to sell the property to a developer.
/>

Soglin said goal at the site is mixed use -- a pedestrian-friendly development with office space, retail and housing.
/>

"We want to make sure the whole site stays together and is developed as a unit," Host-Jablonski said.
/>

If that doesn't happen, he said neighbors hope developers work together to create a single, seamless development.
/>

While he couldn't list specific names, Soglin said it's promising that some developers have already shown interest in the site.
/>

"We're not sure how serious they are, but we took our experiences on East Washington over the last six months and we put out an RFP this week, and let's see what happens," Soglin said.
/>

Developers have just more than a month to submit their proposals. Everything is due to the city by July 27. The mayor said he has appointed a special committee to oversee the process and evaluate the proposals that come in.??

Harlem women scoff at Mayor Bloomberg's ?safe? streets boast

John Taggart for New York Daily News

?New York is the only city I know where a woman could walk in any neighborhood during the day and not have to look over her shoulder, and most neighborhoods at night,? Mayor Bloomberg said. Citywide, crime is up 4% this year compared with the same period last year.

Most ciity streets are safe for women at any hour of the day, Mayor Bloomberg boasted Friday ? but some ladies suggested he?s not walking on their blocks.

?That?s just crazy,? said Angelia Frazer, 48, a Harlem correction officer. ?Bloomberg is living in his own little world. There?s still a lot of dangers lurking out here.?

The mayor made his boast on his weekly radio show when he crowed that New York is one of the safest big cities in the world.

?New York is the only city I know where a woman could walk in any neighborhood during the day and not have to look over her shoulder, and most neighborhoods at night,? the mayor said.

The city has among the lowest crime rates of major U.S. cities, but that?s of little comfort to the women of Harlem?s 32nd Precinct.

There, 17 people have been shot since the beginning of the year. That?s a 30% increase over the same period in 2011.

Citywide, crime is up 4% this year compared with the same period last year.

?You got all kinds of people out here who will take what you have, who will assault you,? said Annie Floyd, 70, a home health worker. ?Mr. Bloomberg doesn?t live in my neighborhood. He doesn?t have to be out here alone.?

The mayor lives 2 miles south of Harlem in an upper East Side townhouse ? and has round-the-clock NYPD protection.

Bloomberg crowed about safety during a conversation about crime in Rio de Janeiro, a city he recently visited. He noticed the Brazilian city was safer than it used to be, but that New York was much better off by comparison.

?There?s some [neighborhoods\] that are still tough, but we are so much safer,? he said. ?You know, unless you travel the world people don?t recognize that.?

Alexis Jones, 18, said violence is a constant threat on her Harlem block ? and she?s reminded often.

?It?s dangerous out here,? she said. ?There are gangs and shootouts in my neighborhood. The mayor knows nothing about where we live.?

Jonnedy Javier, 27, said she worries about her children.

?You never know what?s going to happen in the streets, it?s dangerous out here,? she said. ?Bloomberg talks too much. Instead of cutting out soda, he should do more to cut out crime. You gotta be home no later than 10 p.m.?
