ILG Energy Reacts to News that Americans Value Saving Energy More Than Vacations

For many Americans, the lazy days of summer used to mean traveling around the country and relaxing on the beach. But rising costs have more Americans concerned about how much energy they use from day to day.

80 percent of people surveyed during an AP-NORC Center poll in March and April of 2012 claimed that energy use was an important concern. Energy beat out concerns about the environment, the federal deficit, vacations, and getting the latest gadget. Concerns about energy use included reducing electricity and improving energy efficiency at home.

For ILG Energy, a full service land company serving the oil, gas and alternative energy fields, the poll highlights the need for a better use of energy across the country. For many of those surveyed, the price of gasoline was a major concern as well. People claimed that they wanted to find ways to reduce the cost of transportation. But, for many, giving up a car or purchasing a more fuel efficient vehicle is harder than it seems.

A major problem to using less energy or to finding more sustainable energy sources is that people struggle to make large changes. Many Americans find it easy to turn off lights when they leave a room or to change their light bulbs to more energy efficient CFL bulbs. In fact, 90 percent of those surveyed said they had taken steps in the past year to reduce energy use.

But asking people to carpool or invest in a new fuel efficient car is a step too far. Half of those polled admitted that doing so would cost too much. And as an alternative, some people are choosing to drive less throughout the year.

Most of the people surveyed suggested that energy problems are largely based on Americans? refusal to change. People?s consumption habits were described as wasteful. Some surveyed admitted that living abroad for a period of time helped them realize the waste. And the lifestyles of those in Europe or other countries impacted how they now live in America.
