8:50 PM - newcastle au

These 'flowers' stopped me in my tracks. The owners don't know what they are either.

Cross cultural?relationships?are?full of?interest and questions. ?In another country, a relative, through marriage, becomes ill and the health services are basic and you are left wondering and concerned about the extent of?the treatment options that are within reach of them. Are there any specific measures there that approach what we almost take for granted around here?

How much do the family understand?the nature of the health problems? Do any of us? What useful things can you say during a phone call? Language is a barrier. Local nurses record blood pressure and things. Chinese medicines have been taken up.

There, travel to the city?to more sophisticated health care is daunting and costly and quite unaffordable to all except the wealthy minority and the expats. To assist and pay to go down that path is very open ended and on-going care would require the use of a hire car and strength enough to survive the hair-raising drive as well as keeping up supplies of medicines and managing ongoing doctor's bills.

However, these people are forced to manage rough and tumble and are in touch with the ebb and flow of life without the drama that we kick up. Changes are no less painful for them while they take the limitations somewhat for granted. All the same, do western TV and films make them wonder and feel cheated by lack of services from their government?

How?a truly vast population and one with lots of babies, gets by?without a giant health services is extraordinary. We could learn from it. There must be a?happy medium for all of us.

Anyway, all this will entail a flight to be with the relatives for several weeks at least.
